Look who I saw today

How lovely to see this little girl on an early morning walk through the flowers. She is a Superb Fairy-wren and of course the males have the bright blue colouring, but I think she is just as pretty. So fragile and perfect, flitting from flower to flower through a still and quiet summer morning.

When Peter and I first bought Briar Lane four years ago, the property had an abundance of tall and beautiful trees that were long established, magnificent and imposing. These majestic trees created a tall canopy which brought the bigger birds to the property. Galahs, hawks, ravens, frogmouths, black and sulphur crested cockatoos, all used the trees to rest on their journeys. We even have a long established family of magpies that have lived here for generations and provide much entertainment. They are intelligent and comedic birds and we really enjoy playing with them.

The middle and low canopy of small trees, bushes and flowers where the small birds like to live and forage however, was not so plentiful. Consequently we didn’t have many of those. As we continue to plan and create the gardens, we have many goals in mind, but one of the priorities when deciding what to plant and where, is always to attract more birdlife, particularly the little ones. That is why my heart sang today when I spotted this gorgeous little creature, and I know that as the new plantings become more established, and more flowers bloom and more insects come, that many more of these precious little gifts will appear.
